Why Your Manicure Chips Too Fast — and How to Fix It
There’s nothing more frustrating than leaving the salon (or finishing your at-home manicure) only to find chips in your polish a day or two later. If your manicure never seems to last as long as it should, you’re not alone. The good news? There are a few common culprits behind fast-chipping polish—and easy fixes to keep your nails looking fresh longer.
1. Skipping Nail Prep
If nails are oily or dirty before polish application, the color won’t adhere properly. Always start by washing your hands, removing oils with polish remover, and lightly buffing your nails for a clean base.
2. Ignoring Base Coat

3. Using Thick Polish Layers
Applying polish in heavy coats makes it prone to peeling and smudging. Thin, even layers (with drying time in between) will hold up much better. Try long-lasting OPI GelColor.
4. Skipping the Tip Wrap
If you don’t brush polish across the very edge of your nails, chipping starts at the tips. Sealing the edge with each coat locks in color and prevents early wear.
5. Forgetting Topcoat Refresh
A single topcoat on day one isn’t always enough. Adding a thin layer every 2–3 days protects against chips and restores shine.
6. Using Nails as Tools
Opening cans, peeling labels, or scratching surfaces with your nails weakens polish. Treat your nails like jewels, not tools, if you want your manicure to last.
7. Exposure to Water and Chemicals
Frequent handwashing, cleaning, or long showers can break down polish. Wearing gloves while doing dishes or cleaning can make a huge difference.
8. Skipping Nail Hydration
Dry nails are more prone to splitting and peeling. A daily cuticle oil or hand cream keeps nails flexible and polish intact.
A long-lasting manicure comes down to proper prep, mindful habits, and a little maintenance. By taking these simple steps—from applying polish correctly to protecting your nails day-to-day—you can say goodbye to early chips and enjoy a flawless mani for days longer.
